Whistler Blackcomb is targeting Friday, November 20, 2026 for opening day of the 2026/27 season, weather and conditions permitting. The big change this year: lifts are planned to run 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from opening day through January 15, half an hour later than usual. Expect a limited terrain package to start, and expect late November and early December to be the best value ski nights of the winter.
Here is what I would want to know before heading up.
When is Whistler opening day 2026?
Vail Resorts announced November 20 as the target date in August, and it is still on Whistler Blackcomb's hours page. The fine print: it is always "subject to weather and conditions." In 2024 Blackcomb opened a day early. In 2025 Blackcomb opened November 21 and Whistler Mountain followed on November 26.
So book the trip, but watch the snow report the week before.
New hours this season
B.C. moved to permanent daylight saving time in 2026, so the clocks did not fall back on November 1 and winter mornings are darker. Most valley and alpine lifts are planned to run 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through January 15, and most Snow School programs shift 30 minutes later until mid-February. Upside: an extra half hour of sleep and a last lap in better light. Downside: après starts a bit later. I will allow it.
What terrain opens first?
Not much, and that is normal. Opening day is about getting your legs back, not skiing every run on the map. In recent seasons the early package has centred on the mid and upper mountain:
Blackcomb: Blackcomb Gondola and Jersey Cream Express, with runs like Wishbone.
Whistler: in a good snow year, the Village Gondola, Emerald and Big Red serve easy runs up top like Whisky Jack and Pony Trail.
Downloading: with thin snow down low, you will often ride the gondola back down at the end of the day.
The exact package is announced closer to opening and grows as snowmaking and storms allow. Check the My Epic app each morning. Also new this year: the Showcase T-Bar on Blackcomb is being replaced by a quad chair for easier access to Horstman Glacier and Blackcomb Glacier terrain. That is alpine terrain, so it opens when the snowpack says so.
Epic Pass and lift ticket basics
If you are skiing more than a day or two, do not buy at the ticket window. Window prices are much higher than pass prices.
Epic Pass: unlimited skiing at Whistler Blackcomb and the rest of the Epic network, plus 20% off on-mountain dining, lessons and rentals.
Epic Day Pass: 1 to 7 days to use any time during the season.
Whistler Blackcomb Day Pass: 1 to 10 days at Whistler Blackcomb only.
EDGE Card: for Canadian and Washington State residents, one of the cheapest ways to ski Whistler.
Passes go off sale in early December and prices step up before then, so buy before your trip. Check epicpass.com for the current price and cutoff. Also note the cheaper Day Pass options exclude a few peak dates, including November 27 to 28, 2026 (U.S. Thanksgiving weekend).
Early season tips
Professional hat on:
Manage snow expectations. Thinner base, marked obstacles, firmer groomers. Slow down and save Ski Patrol's number (604 935 5555).
Opening day lift lines are real. Locals come out in force. Arrive early or wait until mid-morning. The weekdays after opening weekend are much quieter.
Book rentals ahead. Tourism Whistler lists early season savings of up to 40% on rentals booked in advance.
Book lessons early. Lesson options grow as terrain opens. In past seasons, privates ran on opening day and group lessons followed about a week later.
Know the etiquette. If it dumps, read my take on joining your friends in the lift line on a powder day first.
Skier hat on: a small opening package on fresh snow is still the best day of November.
Getting to Whistler in winter
Driving: winter tires are mandatory on the Sea to Sky Highway north of Horseshoe Bay from October 1 to March 31 (some other B.C. routes run to April 30). Legal tires carry the M+S or mountain and snowflake symbol with at least 3.5 mm of tread. Renting at YVR? Confirm the car has them. Check DriveBC before you go.
Shuttles: YVR Skylynx and Whistler Shuttle run from the airport, and Epic Rides runs from downtown Vancouver to the Gateway Loop in the Village.
Once you are here: you do not need a car. The free Village shuttles include the winter Marketplace route and the Upper Village/Benchlands route to Blackcomb Base. That is why I like our Marketplace Lodge homes for ski trips: free shuttle out front, short walk to the Village Gondola. Glacier's Reach puts you right in the Village. In Creekside, Lake Placid Lodge is steps from the Creekside Gondola once it is spinning, and The Aspens and Painted Cliff on the Benchlands sit close to Blackcomb's base.
Après and opening weekend
Whistler Blackcomb has not announced opening day events yet. What is confirmed:
GLC, Merlin's and Garbo's are listed to open November 20, with Dusty's in Creekside on November 25.
Whistler Winterlight runs November 27 to 29 at Whistler Olympic Plaza.
The Whistler Film Festival runs December 2 to 6.
For dinner, my shoulder season dining guide covers where I eat before the crowds arrive.
Why late November and early December are the best value
This is the secret most people miss. In our calendar, the nights between opening day and the Christmas rush are some of the lowest priced ski nights of the winter.
Lower nightly rates than Christmas, February or spring break.
Quieter weekday slopes once opening weekend is done.
Early season perks, like Tourism Whistler's $100 shopping credit on 3+ night Whistler.com bookings arriving November 19 to December 20.
Festive without the frenzy. Lights are up and you can still get a dinner reservation.
U.S. Thanksgiving weekend (November 26 to 29) is busier. Come the week before or after and you get the best of both.
